The Project

Bboxx is a start-up that sells solar energy to the developing world on a subscription basis. This operation is done using an internal application called ‘Bboxx Pulse’. My task was to redesign this from the ground up using a new branding and improve the User Experience and Visual Design.

The UX Process

New Bboxx Branding

During this time Bboxx was going through a rebranding initiative using an external PR Agency to create a new brand strategy, visual language and positioning itself to ‘End global energy poverty’. I had to work with the Agency's designers to help formulate a new brand language.

Material Design Components

One of the first tasks in the Product Design team was for me to create a new Design System using Material Design as a basic framework, so that the developers could create their own coded versions of these initial components. Everything was handed over to the developers using Zeplin as a handover tool.

New Bboxx Icon Set

We chose an icon set to be used across the new Bboxx brand that had enough icons to cater for all the customer touch points whether that be for print, social media or in this case for Product Design. These icons were selected and uploaded to Zeplin and shared with the Marketing and Development Teams.

User Journey Flows

Working in an Agile Sprint methodology, I teamed with a Product Owner to scrutinise current user flows to create better friction free user journeys. These were replicated as clickable prototypes that were shared with users in Kigali, Rwanda to get constant feedback and validation.

Visual Design

Working through the Application, Module by Module, we suggesting new ways to visualise content and add extra features to give more value to the business. Below is the new Bboxx Pulse designs incorporating some new features based on User Research using the new Visual Design and updated User Experience.

Customer Module Design

One of the main modules in Bboxx Pulse was the Customer Module that was used by shop owners to seach their database of customers and view an individual customer profile. The search results page included colour coded data to make the data heavy pages easier to scan by Bboxx shop owners.

Customer Details Page

The new design for the Customer Details Page was created using a card based design which was both responsive as the content could stack-up into a single column design and future proof as more content could be added or less content could be shown for different User Permissions.

Responsive Design

The whole application was responsive even though the majority of users would be desktop bound. This meant I had to design both desktop and mobile variations for each Module and provide the Engineering Team with the design for various Breakpoints .
